The Science Behind 3M™ Safety & Security Window Films

What is 3M™ Safety & Security Film?

A window film, sometimes referred to as a tint, is a thin laminate film that can be installed on the interior or exterior of glass. 3M™ Safety & Security Films are built to be strong and nearly tear resistant. For instance, 3M’s Ultra Series of the window security film is about 8 mil (or 0.20 mm) thick and has a tensile strength of 32,000 psi with a break strength of 255 pounds.

How does 3M Safety Film Work?

After impact, the film works by firmly holding together shattered glass fragments, preventing the glass shards from flying and hurting people or damaging property. The film’s performance increases when it is paired with an Impact Protection Adhesive, which firmly attaches the film to the edge of the glass frame.

What makes 3M films different?

It’s 3M™ Safety and Security Films are no exception. 3M’s safety films have been placed under a series of tests, including against spontaneous glass breakage, seismic events and low-force glass impacts. The films have proven to hold glass together firmly after repeated impact (such as someone hitting a glass window – like an unwanted burglar or rioter) for up to two full minutes, which provides additional time for emergency responders to arrive.

Tempered glass can contain impurities like Nickel Sulfide inclusions. When the glass expands and contracts during daily and seasonal temperature cycles, these stresses can cause the glass to explode – which is called spontaneous glass breakage. Tempered glass is used in many interior commercial applications, like elevators, banisters and guard rails. 3M™ Safety Window Films when paired with its attachment system can minimize the hazards at a fraction of the cost of replacing tempered glass if it breaks.
